  LADDER TO THE MOON
Thoreau said "The youth gets together his materials to build a ladder to the moon ... and, at
length, the middle-aged man concludes to build a woodshed with them."

Ladder to the Moon

It was time to make the journey.

Up to the cabin by the lake, the old shack his father had owned. Near his death the father had called to his son to give some final words and in his hand were the Title Deeds. He said, "Son, this place is a jewel. A Jewel that has no value to anyone, but it is worth everything to me because I love it. This place is priceless to me. I just ask you one thing before I go ... Keep this shack in your heart, and keep it in the family. If you do it will always help you and those you love. It will help you remember what is important in life."

And so it was time. Now he was making that final journey, his bones told told him. With the grandchild he went to the wilderness, no longer the strapping youth, or the caring father. He was the old man, the Grandfather. But he still had value, like that old shack. He knew things, he saw thing others did not see, and he wanted to show this favoured child something that was not TV, or Video Games, something that had nothing to do with fashion or fancy things. He wanted to show her the simplicity of nature. So he went to his secret place, the place that made HIS childhood  special ... Up away high up in the hills, up away from the city.

The last leg was a walk in, and after a couple of hours they came to the old cabin. No one had visited in a while, so together they spent the day brushing out the dust and cobwebs, and bringing in the wood for the fire. Night came, and it was Full Moon. The girl saw it shining on the lake, and gasped at the beauty. "It is like a Ladder on the lake, Grandpa, a Ladder to the Moon!"

The Grandfather smiled, and laughed softly. His face, washed with wrinkles, became young again and he asked with a smile, now knowing what he had to say to the girl. "That Ladder you see, what happens when you touch it?"

"It is just the reflection on the water, you know that Gramps" she answers, smiling.

"But the Moon is still there, isn't it?" He asked.

"Of course it is... The Moon is there forever!" She laughed.

The old man stopped, looked at the little one, and said quite seriously. "That's right little one. The Moon IS there forever, but the Ladder to the Moon, it's just a reflection on a lake. You can't climb it, you cannot touch it, but yet there it is anyway."

"It's a pretty ladder," the girl spoke up, "And look ... A duck is up late and splashing in it!"

Soon the water settled, and the shimmering path of light resumed its silent witness.

"This Ladder to the Moon that you see ... It is like your dreams, your hopes and your wishes. These are fragile things, and they will break if you touch them with doubt or suspicion. This Ladder is defenceless. Anyone can beat it, win against it, defeat it with just a brush of their hand. Even a Duck up late can disturb it! (She laughs) Yet no one can defeat it forever. You see how the light will always return, and always point to the moon? (the girl nods) No matter what you do, it will return, and it will always point to the moon. Remember this about your deepest dreams. No matter how difficult life becomes, always remember that your dreams point to something that is Eternal."

The young girl seemed a little puzzled, so the old man explained further.

"Our dreams are not forever. Today you wished for an ice cream, but tomorrow it will be a new doll. That's OK. Our dreams change like the reflection on the water, here today, gone tomorrow. But inside, deeper inside is a great dream, a good dream, a dream of higher things which will lead us to things that DO last. This is that part which is the REAL you, the spark of Life inside. The part of you that seeks only good, and which fears no evil.

"Most important of all ... If your dreams and wishes lead you to appreciate the dreams and wishes of another, and allow others to have the freedom to choose their path, then you have found something truly permanent. Something unshakable even though all the storms would blow and the earth itself would move.

"If you can become someone who considers that another's dreams and goals are ALSO precious things, not to be touched or ignored or doubted, then you will have discovered the greatest secret of all... That the Moon is not up in the sky, it is inside your heart.

"So little one... Tell me.. What is your dream?"

"Just to stay here a little longer." the little girl answers, not really understanding the words, but feeling the love.

The Grandfather looked into her eyes, and saw the reflection of the moon on a small tear that welled on the rim. He said nothing as it grew, and fell. He listened as the little one sobbed and ran into his arms. He felt her heart feel the moment, and he said nothing, but his thoughts ran down an entire lifetime

Right here is his safe place. This is where he came throughout his life when times were hard. When he was in  Europe fighting a war, he came here in his thoughts. When his wife died, he came here. When his son killed himself in a car accident, he came here. When his own children failed to understand him, he came here. This is his Spiritual Home. Places like this, he thought to himself, are important for the Soul. Places like this are where Soul can emerge and shine freely like the Full Moon in the sky.

Here you can come and watch the reflection of your thoughts and your feelings play out on the backdrop of nature. Here you can pause, and cut from the ways of the world, and just be yourself. He thought long and deep, and as he sat looking out to the world beyond, she fell asleep in his arms

"If we have to fight for something in life, little one, it should be for places like this, and times like these." He murmured as he scooped her up and put the little girl to bed.

"Thank you for showing me the Moon, and her ladder Grandpa..." she whispered as he drew the covers over her. The old man smiled, and thought about the world and all the changes he had seen. He thought back to his own father, and his grandfather who had bought this place so long ago. And of course, they were there watching, knowing that soon he would be with them again.

Finally, after all these years, maybe he had found the one he could leave it to.  "So few cherish anything of real value anymore." he said to his father, and his grandfather, and to the shadows on the wall, and to the spirits of the Lake, and the whispering soul of the wood. "So few cherish themselves."
